What is Ayurveda?

Known as the "Sister Science" of Yoga, Ayurveda is a 5,000 year old system of medicine from India, integrating science with the art of healing.

According to Yoga Journal, Ayurveda is "a system of healing that examines physical constitution, emotional nature, and spiritual outlook in the context of the universe. According to the philosophy, universal life force manifests as three different energies, or doshas, known as vata, pitta, and kapha."

Dosha? Constitution? Pitta? It might seem a little overwhleming at first, but if you're interested in extending your yoga practice to other aspects of your life then Ayurveda might be for you. Put simply, Ayurveda uses diet, nutrition and massage to encourage a vibrant and healthy body and mind. Different foods are recommended for different body types (or "constitutions") and for different times of the year.

If you're not sure where to start, try doing a little research online - Joyful Belly and Yoga Journal are great places to start. If you like what you see, why not try an Ayurvedic consultation? There are plenty of great practitioners out there, with the expertise and knowledge to guide you as you explore a new healthier lifestyle!
